Decrease in the Number of Japanese People in Japan: Two Reasons Behind

The number of Japanese citizens in Japan decreased by 898 thousand compared to the previous year. This is considered the largest decline ever recorded. The Japanese government announced that the number of Japanese citizens in the country decreased by 898 thousand to 120.3 million compared to the previous year. According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan, the largest annual decline in the number of Japanese citizens was recorded as of October 2024. The country’s total population, including foreigners, also decreased to 123.8 million in October 2024, with a decrease of 550 thousand compared to the previous year. The population in the “15-64 age group,” considered the working-age population, was recorded as 73.73 million, decreasing by 224 thousand. The aging of society and declining birth rates are cited as the main factors contributing to the population decline.
