US President Trump indicated that he met with Prime Minister Ishiba of Japan, stating, “They’ve treated us very badly in terms of trade.” President Donald Trump took to social media to evaluate the new customs tariffs imposed on a range of countries and the economic relations with Japan. Sharing a message on his Truth Social account, Trump defended the establishment of “tough but fair parameters,” declaring, “Countries from all over the world are talking to us.” Trump, who said he spoke with Japan’s Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru this morning local time, mentioned sending a high-level team to negotiate. He stated, “They’ve treated us very badly in terms of trade. They don’t take our cars, but we buy millions of cars from them. In agriculture and many other ‘things’ as well. This needs to change, especially with China.” Trump claimed in another post on the Truth Social platform today that the US has made “billions of dollars in revenue within a week” thanks to the customs tariffs he implemented, arguing that the country’s economy has seen decreases in oil and food prices, interest rates, and inflation. Despite China imposing an additional 34% customs tariff on the US economy, Trump pointed out they still generated revenue. Trump stated that countries have “benefited from the US’s resources for years and made enough profits” while suggesting that past US administrations should be blamed for allowing this. Trump signed an executive order on April 2 imposing additional customs tariffs on all products imported to the US. The tariff rates imposed on many of the US’s trading partners range from 10% to 50%. Several countries and the European Union have reacted to Trump’s tariffs, indicating that these rates will be negotiated with the US.
