House Arrest Issued for Netanyahu’s Adviser and Spokesperson in “Katargate” Case

2 Mins Read

During the first hearing of the case known as “Katargate,” close associates of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, including his spokesperson and adviser, were ordered to two weeks of house arrest. The judge decided to place Netanyahu’s spokesperson Eliezer Feldstein and adviser Jonathan Urich under house arrest for two weeks despite the Israeli police’s request to extend their detention period. In addition to the house arrest, the court imposed a prohibition on contacting individuals associated with the “Katargate” scandal for Feldstein and Urich for two months and an overseas travel ban for 80 days. Netanyahu’s personal lawyer, Amit Hadad, is representing Feldstein and Urich in court. Hadad claimed that his clients were mistreated during the police interrogation, alleging that Urich fainted after police officers shouted at him. According to Israeli media reports, Feldstein and Urich engaged in a heated argument during a joint interrogation session yesterday. Following conflicting statements by the individually questioned suspects, a joint questioning was conducted, during which it was reported that Feldstein accused Urich of lying, resulting in Urich bursting into tears. The “Katargate” discussions began with allegations that millions of dollars were received from Qatar and transferred to Netanyahu’s election campaign. The case involved Netanyahu’s spokesperson Eliezer Feldstein, his advisors Jonathan Urich and Srulik Einhorn, and was under investigation by the Shin Bet. Israeli media reported allegations of Netanyahu receiving $15 million in 2012 and $50 million in 2018. It was mentioned that Feldstein received a salary from an international company to support Qatar’s image, while Urich and Einhorn provided image consultancy for Qatar. A recorded conversation where Israeli businessman Gil Bilger claimed to have transferred money to Feldstein was aired on Israeli TV, with Feldstein admitting to the allegation. Netanyahu’s spokesperson Feldstein and adviser Urich were arrested on March 31 as part of the “Katargate” investigation, with Netanyahu also providing a statement to the police on the same day.
