Netanyahu Flies to Europe Despite Arrest Warrant: Visits “Safe Zone”

2 Mins Read

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu traveled to Hungary despite an international arrest warrant against him. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is stepping foot on European soil for the first time since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against him for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Netanyahu embarked on a four-day official visit to Hungary at the invitation of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Orban had openly expressed his intention to defy the arrest warrant shortly after it was announced in November, declaring that he would host Netanyahu. Orban told reporters that the ICC’s decision would have “no impact in Hungary.” Hungary became one of the signatories of the ICC more than twenty years ago, agreeing to arrest and surrender individuals with outstanding warrants if they set foot in the country. However, sources within the Orban government have reportedly raised the possibility of withdrawing from the court in recent days. The visit comes two weeks after Israel broke the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. AIRPORT PROTEST Israelis protested Netanyahu at the airport before his departure to Hungary. The Israeli military radio stated that the purpose of the protest at Ben Gurion Airport was the “release of Israeli prisoners.” Israeli demonstrators at the airport were reported to have held banners demanding “an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli prisoners.” The families of Israeli prisoners, who opposed the Netanyahu government’s renewed attacks on Gaza, voiced their concerns asking, “Has it been decided to sacrifice the lives of our hostages in exchange for taking over Gaza?”
