Following Rumeysa Ozturk in the USA, Iranian student Alireza Doroudi, who is pursuing a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering at Alabama University, was reported to have been detained by Customs and Border Protection officials. According to the student newspaper, The Crimson White, at Alabama University, Doroudi, an Iranian student, was detained by federal immigration officials who showed up at his residence. While a university spokesperson confirmed that the student was detained by officials, ICE authorities did not provide any explanation for the reason behind Doroudi’s detention, who entered the USA with an F-1 student visa. Doroudi’s detention at a time when the Trump administration has intensified arrests and deportations of university students with visas and green cards has raised concerns among university students. Another student detained by ICE officials, Rumeysa Ozturk, was taken into custody on the evening of March 25th by plainclothes ICE officers as she was leaving her home in Massachusetts to go to dinner. Ozturk’s lawyer, Mahsa Khanbabai, disclosed that there was no news about her client, and a written statement from Tufts University indicated that there was no notification to the university administration regarding this detention process. Previously, Palestinian activist Mahmud Halil, who recently graduated from Columbia University, was also detained.
