Dinosaur Surprise in the Gobi Desert: Discovery of a Two-Clawed New Species

2 Mins Read

Canadian researchers made a discovery in the Gobi Desert, finding a new species of dinosaur named “Duonychus tsogtbaatari” that, while belonging to the Therizinosaur group, stands out with its two-clawed foot. Researchers from Canada discovered a new dinosaur species with two claws, despite being part of the Therizinosaur group that typically has three claws. The researchers from the University of Calgary stated that samples taken from the Gobi Desert, spanning Mongolia and China, belonged to a dinosaur that lived between 66 and 100.5 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period. They identified these samples as belonging to a new species within the Therizinosaur group, which could stand on its hind legs and usually has three-clawed feet. Unlike the usual three-clawed Therizinosaur group, this dinosaur species, noted to have two claws, was named “Duonychus tsogtbaatari” by the researchers, estimating its weight to be around 260 kilograms. The researchers suggested that the strong flexibility of the long, curved claws of this new species could have aided in grasping plants effectively, as well as potentially being used for defense. Pointing out that two-clawed theropods are typically found in the Tyrannosaur group like Tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex), the researchers noted that the newly discovered species “Duonychus tsogtbaatari” evolved differently from these groups.
