President Donald Trump has reportedly sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, granting a two-month deadline to reach a new nuclear deal.
A US official and two sources familiar with the letter stated to Axios that President Donald Trump’s letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei allows for a two-month period to reach a new nuclear agreement. Iran’s nuclear program has significantly advanced in the past four years, making it closer than ever to producing nuclear weapons. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran’s 60% enriched uranium stockpile could be sufficient to produce six nuclear bombs if enriched to 90%. Iran denies allegations of pursuing nuclear weapons. Two weeks ago, Trump revealed in an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo that he sent a letter offering direct negotiations to Khamenei. The next day, Trump mentioned that the US is approaching the “final moments” of reaching an agreement with Iran and stated, “We cannot allow them to have a nuclear weapon. Something will happen very soon. I prefer a peaceful deal, but the other option also solves the problem.” while avoiding conflict, Iran’s UN mission remained silent regarding questions from journalists.
Khamenei labeled Trump’s letter and negotiation offer as a “deception to pressurize the world by portraying Iran as the unwilling side to negotiate.” Additionally, Iran’s UN mission hinted at the possibility of certain discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program: The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that the letter is still under review and a response will be given soon. Trump, in his latest social media statement, declared that the Houthis will be “completely eliminated” and warned Tehran not to continue supporting them. Trump stated, “Iran must stop the shipment of these materials IMMEDIATELY. Let the Houthis fight among themselves. They lose either way, but this way, it will be quick.”
