1 Mins Read

A bill banning LGBT marches was approved in the Hungarian parliament. Authorities can use facial recognition systems to identify individuals attending prohibited events. Opposition lawmakers protested the decision by lighting colorful signal flares in the hall.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party Fidesz introduced a bill in parliament banning LGBT marches on the grounds that they could be harmful to children.

The bill was passed with 136 votes in favor and 27 against. Lawmakers from the opposition party Momentum reacted by lighting colorful signal flares in the hall.

Supported by Orban’s Fidesz party and minority coalition partner Christian Democrats, the law deems organizing or participating in events that violate the “child protection” legislation or promote homosexuality to children as a crime.

According to the law, individuals attending banned events may face fines of up to 200,000 forints (546 dollars).

Authorities will also be able to use facial recognition systems to identify individuals attending prohibited events.
