1 Mins Read

Since the onset of heavy rainfall in November 2024, 20 people have lost their lives due to melioidosis in Australia.

In the state of Queensland, Australia, it has been reported that since the beginning of severe rainfalls in November 2024, there have been 125 recorded cases of melioidosis. The number of deaths from melioidosis-related illnesses in the state has reached 20 after an elderly man passed away in the northern town of Townsville. Authorities have urged the elderly and those with chronic illnesses to stay away from mud as heavy rains are expected to continue in Queensland.

Melioidosis is transmitted through inhaling mud particles or contact with contaminated water. Professor Dr. Paul Griffin, who works on infectious diseases at Queensland University, stated that the number of deaths caused by the outbreak is higher than expected. He emphasized the need to raise awareness among people in order to reduce cases and prevent further fatalities.
