Pistachio Trees Thriving in Siirt and Exported to Europe: Annual Production Exceeds 1 Million Trees, Boosting Regional Development

In Siirt, a facility produces over one million pistachio tree saplings annually to meet the region’s pistachio demand. Not only do the saplings grown in Siirt meet the region’s pistachio needs, but they are also sent to various regions in Turkey. Located on the Siirt Baykan highway, the facility produces over one million pistachio tree saplings per year, making Siirt a significant center for pistachio production. Pistachio tree grower Hamza Keleş, who started this business in 2000, stated the following: “Since our father was a farmer, we continue to farm. We have produced an estimated 25 million pistachio saplings from 2000 until now. This year, our production is 1.5 million saplings. We are very happy with the production and employment opportunities it brings. We struggle to find workers. It has a serious economic return. Not only in Eastern Anatolia but also to many provinces in Turkey and even abroad, we continue to ship saplings. That’s why I am happy.”

Worker Ahmet Can, emphasizing that quality pistachios are produced in Siirt, stated, “Most of the pistachios are distributed from Siirt to the region. The best pistachios in these regions are produced here. Generally, all of Turkey prefers this place. The pistachios we produce here are very productive. In fact, the matured pistachio trees that grow here are usually exported to Europe.”
