Eruption of Mount Etna: Skiing Among Lava!

2 Mins Read

Once again, the active volcano of Mount Etna in southern Italy has erupted. Footage captured with an FPV drone during this event created a stunning visual spectacle. The sight of a tour guide skiing right next to the lava brought hearts to mouths.

26-year-old drone pilot Josh Turner, who traveled to the region to film the eruption of Mount Etna in southern Italy, amazed viewers with the footage he captured.

Turner, who has been flying FPV drones for eight years, climbed to the top of the ski lifts in Piano Provenzana in order to film the moment of Etna’s eruption. He then went around the western slope of Etna and reached the top of the lava crack at an altitude of about 3,100 meters.

Turner hiked around the mountain for 4 hours in order to capture the footage recorded in February, and he flew his drone over the top during a major eruption at the summit, capturing unique visuals.

HELD BREATHS

In the footage recorded by volcano guide Davide Tomasello at sunset, the sight of skiing near a 1-kilometer lava flow both inspired awe and held the breath of viewers. Turner mentioned that he brought 3 spare drones with him in order to be able to capture this footage, stating, “There were some difficulties such as high winds and the risk of colliding with flying lava while operating the unmanned aerial vehicle. The best footage is obtained by flying close to the action, so I was willing to take risks. The environment was very cold, which helped prevent overheating while flying close to the lava.”
