2 Mins Read

Peru’s former president, Pedro Castillo, who has been on a hunger strike since December 2022 while incarcerated, has been taken to the hospital. Due to deteriorating health, former President Pedro Castillo, who started a hunger strike in prison, was transferred to a hospital in the Vitarte district by ambulance. Officials announced that Castillo was sent to the hospital due to suspected fluid-electrolyte imbalance and mild dehydration. Judge Norma Carbajal stated that the 55-year-old Castillo is not in critical condition and said, “He was taken to the hospital as a precaution. His condition is stable.” Meanwhile, according to local media, Castillo’s visitor rights have been suspended due to violating prison rules during the hunger strike. His former lawyer, Walter Ayala, revealed that Castillo has applied to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to have his rights reinstated. Castillo had announced that he started a hunger strike in prison on March 10 to protest the court during the trial for “disturbing public order” charges. Denying the accusations against him, Castillo had stated, “I have been unjustly imprisoned for crimes I never committed. Today, due to the injustices against me, I have decided to start a hunger strike.” Former President Castillo, impeached by Congress on December 7, 2022, was sentenced to 18 months of preventive imprisonment on December 14, 2022. Accused of leading a criminal organization and committing public crimes in Peru since December 2022, Castillo’s preventive detention was extended by 14 months until June 11, 2024.
