Cancellation of Birthright Citizenship in the US: Trump Administration Seeks Partial Implementation of Decision

1 Mins Read

The Trump administration has petitioned the Supreme Court to allow partial enforcement of the executive order that restricts the acquisition of birthright citizenship. The administration has taken action against the nationwide injunctions issued by federal judges in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington halting the implementation of the executive order. In the petition submitted to the Supreme Court through the Department of Justice, it was argued that the decisions of the district judges do not have nationwide validity. The petition requested that while the legal process continues, the executive order should be partially implemented nationwide, with the decisions being limited to the plaintiffs in the cases and within the court’s jurisdiction. President Trump signed an executive order on January 20, which eliminates the automatic citizenship granted to children born in the country. The executive order proposes that a child born in the US to an undocumented mother cannot obtain citizenship by birthright if the father is neither a citizen nor a green card holder. On January 21, 22 states’ attorneys general filed lawsuits against the executive order.
