In Greenland, where US President Donald Trump’s takeover threats continued, the Democratic Party in opposition won the general elections. The center-right opposition party managed to secure a surprise victory under the shadow of the ongoing Trump threat.
The parliamentary elections took place in Greenland, an island country with a population of 57,000.
In the general elections in Greenland, where the demand for independence and the promise of the US President Donald Trump to take over the semi-autonomous region were prominent, the center-right opposition achieved a surprise victory. The Democratic Party, which advocates a gradual approach towards independence, received approximately 30% of the votes. Surpassing the ruling left-wing Inuit Ataqatigiit party, the opposition party secured a majority in the parliament.
COALITION IN SIGHT IN GREENLAND
According to the election results, no party can govern alone. Therefore, a new coalition government is expected to be formed in Greenland. Party leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen told local media, “At a time when Greenland is attracting significant attention from outside, we need to stand together.” Nielsen stated that they oppose Trump’s idea of adding Greenland to the US.
TRUMP’S CLAIMS ABOUT GREENLAND
US President Trump had argued on social media on December 23 that owning and controlling Greenland was an absolute necessity. Trump, most recently, stated in a speech to the US Congress on March 5, “We need Greenland. One way or another, we will obtain it.”
According to surveys, 85% of the 57,000 population in the island is against joining the US.
