Rodrigo Duterte, accused of crimes against humanity for his war on drugs, was arrested in Manila by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, accused of being responsible for crimes against humanity committed during his war on drugs, was arrested upon his return to his country. Duterte, who returned from Hong Kong to Manila today, was reported to have been taken to a detention center under the ICC’s arrest warrant issued against him.
A statement from the Philippine Presidential Communications Office confirmed that the arrest warrant sent by the ICC had reached the INTERPOL Manila office, stating that the “Former President is currently under the authorities’ supervision.” Duterte’s health was reported to be good. “READY TO BE ARRESTED” Duterte had stated in an announcement in Hong Kong yesterday that he was ready to be arrested if the ICC issued a decision against him. Defending that his war on drugs was legitimate, Duterte emphasized that he did not order the police to kill drug suspects other than in legitimate defense.
ACCUSED OF CAUSING DEATHS OF THOUSANDS
Duterte is accused of causing the deaths of thousands of people, including children, during his war on drugs throughout his term from 2016 to 2022. Duterte is alleged to be responsible for crimes against humanity.
