In Manipur, India, known for its violent incidents, clashes broke out between protesters from the Kuki community and security forces. One person lost their life, and 43 others were injured. According to India’s NDTV channel, the Kuki community protested the government’s decision in the state regarding the “free movement of vehicles.” In a statement on the X social media platform, the state police reported that protesters blocked the path of buses escorted by security forces departing from the state capital, Imphal. The statement mentioned that a clash erupted between security forces and members of the community, including armed individuals. It was noted that security forces responded to the protesters firing shots with tear gas and batons, resulting in 27 security personnel being injured in the clash. The statement indicated that one person from the Kuki community was killed, and 16 others were injured. Additionally, a leader from the Kuki community stated that they would strongly oppose the government’s “free movement attempt” and called on community members to block roads in their areas. The violent incidents in Manipur began on May 3, 2023, as a response to protests sparked by the Meitei community, which represents 53% of the population, who were not included in the “Scheduled Tribe” category along with Kukis and other ethnic groups. In the state where the order to “shoot” was given, more than 250 people have died in violent incidents and over 60,000 people have been displaced.
