2 Mins Read

The Ministry of Treasury has intensified inspections on cash renters. Those who commit irregularities to evade taxes in rent can face fines of up to 20 million liras.

The Treasury and Ministry of Finance have accelerated rent inspections as part of the fight against the informal economy. Following the removal of the 25 percent limit on rent, some opportunistic landlords have sprung into action. Complaints have increased against landlords attempting to charge exorbitant rents. According to a report in Türkiye newspaper, complaints have been filed with the Presidential Communication Center (CİMER) and the Revenue Administration Presidency regarding this issue. It has been revealed that some landlords do not want to make contracts to avoid high taxes, show their property as vacant, or receive part of the rent in cash and the rest via bank. In response, the Treasury has tightened rent inspections. Treasury teams will impose fines on landlords who show their property as vacant, avoid creating contracts, or receive partial rent payments through the bank. TENANTS WILL ALSO BE FINED The Ministry officially implemented the regulation increasing penalties for rent in October 2024. Additionally, with this regulation, penalties are now applied to both tenants and landlords in residential rents as well. Therefore, for commercial rents, all amounts and for residential rents over 500 liras must be paid through banks or the Post Office. UP TO 20 MILLION LIRA FINE POSSIBLE In this context, those who do not make rent payments through banks or the Post Office and opt for cash transactions will face a special irregularity fine equal to 10 percent of the rent amount for each detection. The fine amount imposed cannot be less than 5,000 liras. Moreover, fines of up to 20 million liras can be imposed within one calendar year.
