Trump Cancels Columbia University’s $400 Million Fund: Punishment for Gaza Protests

1 Mins Read

The Trump administration in the US canceled Columbia University’s $400 million fund, citing “insufficient action against antisemitism” at the center of support demonstrations for Gaza.

In a joint statement with the General Services Administration (GSA), the Department of Justice, the Department of Education, and the Department of Health and Human Services announced the termination of various contracts Columbia University had with federal agencies. According to the statement, funds totaling $400 million were canceled because the university “did not adequately combat antisemitism” and “failed to protect Jewish students and staff.”

PUNISHMENT FOR GAZA PROTESTS Many individuals expressed their reactions to the statement on social media, suggesting that Columbia University, where demonstration in support of Gaza spread across campuses nationwide last year, was “punished” in this manner. Allegations of antisemitism and Islamophobia were raised during last year’s protests, and Columbia University had previously stated its efforts in combating antisemitism. University students protested against Israel’s atrocities in Gaza and the US’s unconditional support, organizing demonstrations that lasted for weeks in spring last year. President Trump had threatened to cut off all funding from schools allowing “illegal” protests on campuses.
