Are Butterflies Facing Extinction? Population Decreased by 22% in the US

1 Mins Read

American scientists have revealed that the butterfly populations across the country have dropped by 22% between 2000 and 2020. According to the scientists, the decline in butterfly population is attributed to habitat loss, agricultural pesticides, and climate change.

According to Science Daily, data from 76,000 studies on butterflies were analyzed, totaling 12.6 million records. Scientists utilized statistical models to examine the population changes of 342 butterfly species over the years and identified the decline rates and most affected species.

DECREASED BY 22%: The study found that the butterfly population in the US decreased by 22% from 2000 to 2020. The research highlighted that over 50% of the butterfly populations of 107 different species in the US have decreased, with some species being almost 98% extinct.

REASONS BEHIND BUTTERFLY POPULATION DECLINE: Scientists indicated that the decline in butterfly population is linked to habitat loss, agricultural pesticides, and climate change. Emphasizing the vital role butterflies play in the ecosystem, scientists mentioned that with proper conservation measures, butterfly populations could recover due to their rapid reproductive ability. The research findings were published in the journal “Science.”
