The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is scheduled to hold a meeting next week with the CEOs of the country’s largest technology companies. The discussion will cover topics such as import tariffs, export restrictions, and chip production. President Donald Trump is preparing to meet with major players in the technology sector. This meeting, which will be attended by CEOs of giant companies like HP, Intel, IBM, and Qualcomm, is of great significance for the future of the tech world. Among the main agenda items for the meeting are import tariffs, export restrictions, and regulations on the export of artificial intelligence technologies. According to Bloomberg, the meeting will take place on Monday, March 10th at the White House. It is expected that during this meeting, company leaders will raise concerns that the additional customs duties imposed by the Trump administration may put computer and hardware manufacturers in a difficult position.
WHAT ARE THE CONCERNS OF COMPANIES?
The Trump administration has started to impose customs duties ranging from 10% to 25% on products and components imported from countries such as China, Mexico, and Canada. Following this development, the prices of critical semiconductors, steel, and aluminum, which hardware manufacturers mostly import from China, have increased. This has led to a rise in production costs. The imposed customs duties also caused problems in the supply chain of US manufacturers. American companies, which are heavily dependent on components imported from China, experienced disruptions in their supply chains and struggled to find alternative sources.
There are concerns that the increased production costs may lead to American manufacturers losing their competitiveness in the international market. Due to high costs, it is expected that the selling prices of products such as computers, smartphones, processors, graphics cards, and similar items will also increase. Experts believe that it will be difficult for US giants to compete with Chinese companies that produce at low costs in this situation.
CHIP LAW COULD BE REPEALED
One of the important agenda items of the meeting will be the CHIPS and Science Act, which came into force in 2022. This law, aimed at promoting semiconductor production in the US, provides large companies with billions of dollars in government support and tax incentives. Donald Trump believes that these incentives are unnecessary and plans to repeal the law. In recent days, speaking to Congress about the Chip Act, the President of the United States used the words “horrible thing” and called for its repeal. It is indicated that during the meeting on Monday, company CEOs will request Trump to keep this law in effect.
