President Donald Trump stated that substantial progress was made in the discussions with Russia and Ukraine over the past two days, mentioning, “Ukraine wants to make a deal because I don’t think they have other options. I believe Russia also wants to make a deal.” Trump, who is heading to Saudi Arabia, mentioned that Saudi Arabia will invest 1 trillion dollars into the US and that’s the reason for his visit. NATO and Gaza were also on the agenda for the US President. Trump, during a signing ceremony in the Oval Office, discussed various foreign policy issues from the Russia-Ukraine topic to the Middle East. He mentioned that discussions with both Russia and Ukraine are continuing, and they have made significant progress. Trump said, “Over the past 2 days, we have made substantial progress in the discussions with Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine wants to make a deal because I don’t think they have other options. I believe Russia also wants to make a deal.” Additionally, the US President indicated that he will soon make a decision regarding any changes to the temporary legal status of around 240,000 Ukrainian immigrants in the country. TRUMP CRITICIZES NATO Trump expressed that the US has been paying too much to NATO while other countries have fallen short of their spending obligations. He stated, “I said, if you don’t pay, we’re not going to defend you. I said this 7 years ago, and that’s why they paid hundreds of millions of dollars. They said, if we were indebted, would you defend us? No, I wouldn’t, I said.” Trump described the payment situation at NATO as very unfair, mentioning that some countries cover their defense expenses themselves and, in return, get a bad deal in trade. TALKS WITH HAMAS Trump also addressed reports of direct discussions between the US and Hamas, stating, “We are having talks with Hamas. In these talks, we are helping Israel. We are not giving them cash.” Trump emphasized that Hamas should not govern Gaza and all hostages held by Hamas must be released. “I AM GOING TO SAUDI ARABIA” Furthermore, Trump highlighted the strong relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia, mentioning that he would visit the country if American companies invest sufficiently. Trump said, “I said if you buy $1 trillion worth of goods from American companies within 4 years, I will come. They agreed to do so, and I will go there. I have a great relationship with them. They will spend a lot of money on military equipment from American companies.” EMPHASIS ON NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT President Trump drew attention to the large number of nuclear weapons in countries like Russia and China worldwide, underscoring that it would be excellent if all countries could rid themselves of nuclear weapons. Trump said, “It would be wonderful if we could all get rid of nuclear weapons because their power is insane. I would like to start nuclear disarmament talks.” “I MAY EXTEND THE DEADLINE FOR TIKTOK” Trump also addressed the suspension of the enforcement of a law that would ban TikTok in the US if not sold to an American firm for 75 days. Stressing the high interest in TikTok, Trump mentioned, “We now have at least another month. There is no need to extend it, but I may probably extend it if necessary.” He expressed that China plays a role in the TikTok issue and hoped for their approval of a possible deal. TikTok was initially set to be banned in the US on January 19 under a law that prohibits it from being sold to an American company, but the ban was lifted the same day. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office to suspend the enforcement of this law for 75 days.
