725 Kilometers of New Rumble Strips Against Traffic Accidents

3 Mins Read

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Uraloglu, stated that this year, a 725-kilometer rumble strip application will be carried out with the aim of preventing traffic accidents caused by veering off the road. Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu of Transport and Infrastructure made a statement regarding the efforts to ensure traffic safety nationwide conducted by the General Directorate of Highways (KGM). Uraloğlu expressed that data from all devices such as meteorological sensors, variable message signs, and cameras placed at certain points by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Centers within KGM are collected, allowing road users to be instantly informed. He mentioned that through meteorological information stations, cameras, and incident detection applications, they can instantly detect the effects of variables such as weather events, environmental conditions, and potential accidents. “Signaling systems, variable message signs, radio broadcasts, and mobile information applications inform all drivers about the current road conditions. In this context, we made 810 intersection traffic warning signaling operational last year. This year, 120 more intersections will be equipped with traffic warning systems. With intelligent transportation systems, we will maximize road safety and prevent unnecessary loss of time and resources,” he said. Uraloğlu mentioned that within the scope of the efforts to convert fixed-time signaling systems into traffic warning signaling management forms, 279 intersections, including 44 renewals and 235 new facilities, were worked on last year. “A total of 103 intersections were converted to traffic adaptive signaling management form. This year, as part of the effort to convert intersections to traffic adaptive signaling management form, 70 intersections will be turned into traffic adaptive systems, and 1,200 synchronized IUGC (Flashing) systems that can be accessed and managed remotely are planned to be installed for foggy areas. Among our objectives is also the installation of 17 variable message signs and 10 meteorological information stations at various locations,” he added. Uraloğlu explained that the rumble strip application aimed to prevent drivers from veering off the road, especially during long journeys due to distractions, drowsiness, or lack of attention. “When vehicle tires pass over the rumble strip, the vibration and sound produced alert the driver and provide an opportunity to steer the vehicle back onto the correct lane. This application is an effective measure in reducing accidents caused by veering off the road. It also alerts drivers to be careful as they approach unexpected road and traffic conditions. Especially during night drives and in weather conditions with limited visibility, rumble strips become an important supportive element in enhancing driving safety. Through these bands that alert the driver with vibrations, we aim to prevent accidents caused by distraction and veering off the road,” he said. Minister Uraloğlu noted that the rumble strip application had been expanded on divided roads within the responsibility area of the General Directorate of Highways to reduce accidents occurring especially on the shoulder or roadside. “We continue this application to reduce accidents occurring on the shoulder or roadside. Rumble strip applications have been implemented on 6,126 kilometers of road sections since 2016. We plan to carry out rumble strip applications on a 725-kilometer section by 2025.”
