40% of 100 People Can’t Eat Meat, 20% Can’t Heat Their Homes

In Turkey, the number of poor people decreased by 0.9 points to 13.5% in 2023. The relative poverty figure decreased by 697,000. TURKSTAT data revealed that 58 out of 100 people were in debt, and one-third of society was at risk of social exclusion. According to the research, 40 out of 100 people cannot afford to eat meat every other day, and 20% cannot meet their heating needs at home. 32% of the society has roofing problems where the roof is leaking.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) reissued the Poverty and Living Conditions Statistics for 2023 with corrections. The poverty rate in Turkey was determined to be 13.5% in 2023, decreasing by 0.9 points. TURKSTAT stated that there were discrepancies in some indicators due to the incomplete calculation of imputed rent, which is a component of household income.

According to TURKSTAT data, the poverty rate based on the poverty threshold calculated by considering 50% of the equivalent household disposable income median decreased by 0.9 points to 13.5% in 2023. The poverty rate calculated based on 60% of the average income decreased by 0.3 points to 21.3% last year. The poverty rate based on 40% of the average income decreased by 0.6 points to 7% compared to the previous year. The poverty rate calculated based on 70% of the average income decreased by 0.3 points to 29% compared to the previous year.

In household populations consisting of more than one person without a core family, the poverty rate decreased by 4 points to 7.7% compared to the previous year. The poverty rate in single-person households decreased by 0.2 points to 7.3% last year. The poverty rate of households with at least one core family and other people decreased by 2.6 points to 17%. The poverty rate of households consisting of only one core family decreased by 0.6 points to 13.3%.

The material and social deprivation rate decreased from 16.6% in 2022 to 14.4% in 2023 according to survey results. The material and social deprivation rate was calculated based on several variables including owning a car at the household level, making unexpected economic expenses, being able to cover a week-long holiday expense away from home, paying rent, mortgage, and interest debts, being able to eat a meal containing meat every other day, meeting heating needs at home, and replacing worn-out furniture.

The continuous poverty rate calculated using four years of panel data including individuals who have been poor at least two of the last three years based on 60% of the household equivalent disposable income median decreased by 1 point to 13% according to the 2023 survey results.
